The current approach is to keep blasting away at Russian forces. There is mention of returning Russia to the Stone Age. Chaos could be avoided if Ukraine, NATO, and the European Union would offer Russia a comprehensive settlement and treaty agreement. The one I propose would be eagerly accepted by all sides.
Russia is defeated militarily. Russians are demanding that Putin resign and that the war end. Putin might even be assassinated. God forbid.
Russia is collapsing economically. There is a flood of emigration from Russia that could destabilize all of its neighbors. Russia may be headed for possible breakup and revolution. Chaos would ensue. There are some 6,000 nukes in Russia. We could have several Russian republics with nukes. There are many suicidal extremist Muslims there who cannot be controlled by moderate Muslims. We can and should avoid the kind of chaos that we created in Iraq.
The current approach is to keep blasting away at Russian forces. There is mention of returning Russia to the Stone Age. Complete defeat of the Russians will come soon, but it would be better if the Russians be allowed to surrender.
Chaos could be avoided if Ukraine, NATO, and the European Union would offer Russia a comprehensive settlement and treaty agreement.
The proposal would be made to the people of Russia – not to Vladimir Putin – and not subject to Putin’s approval.
Putin would resign and retire to his mansion on the Black Sea under house arrest. It is important that he not be harmed. If only to avoid chaos, he should be given “a way out”. There are rumors that he is dying of cancer. He may already have his death sentence. An offer of jail time might discourage him from resigning voluntarily.
The wealth that Putin and the oligarchs have parked in foreign countries, would be applied to pay for the damage done to Ukraine and Ukrainians.
Putin would retain $10 million plus one mansion. He would then have the time and place maybe to repent of his numerous sins.
The Oligarchs too would retain $10 million each and one mansion. They might retain some part ownership in the industries they managed in proportion to any value they added. They too should be given a “way out” in order to facilitate a settlement.
Other wealth that Putin and the oligarchs hold inside Russia would be confiscated and used to create a Russian sovereign wealth fund to benefit children and mothers first. It would also support treatment of men for alcoholism. Another benefit would be the Installation of flush toilets in the twenty percent of homes that have only outhouses.
An aside: The way to deal with addictions is to substitute one addiction with another. I am not referring to a different drug. I am referring to an addiction to World of Warcraft. World of Warcraft and other internet games are so engaging that players play it for hours and days. They would rather play it than venture forth to buy drugs or booze. Now back to the main topic.
The economic boycott and sanctions should be lifted quickly, although in stages. Russia would apply for membership in the European Union, subject to Russia’s appointment of a pro-peace transitional government and the holding of free and fair elections. Western companies that left Russia would be encouraged to return.
Government officials in Russia should be paid well so that bribery and corruption laws could be enforced. The death penalty should be abolished. Of course, Navalny would be released and allowed to campaign freely.
Ukraine would join NATO, which would reaffirm that it is a defense-only alliance. Ukraine would pledge not to allow any country to attack Russia through Ukraine and to assist the new Russia in every way possible.
Russia would pledge to respect international boundaries and to remove its “little green men” from Ukrainian territory, including Crimea. Russia would remove them also from all breakaway territories in former USSR countries. Breakaway armies would be incentivized to become peaceful political parties.
The Kerch Bridge would be repaired and would be renamed the Ukrainian-Russian Friendship Bridge. It would be a conduit for trade and cultural exchange.
The goal would be to avoid punishing the Russian people for wrongs committed by one madman and to rebuild a Russia that will be stable and no longer a menace to the rest of the world.
When the USSR broke up, the West took advantage of Russia and convinced the alcoholic Yeltsin to apply a radical University of Chicago School of Economics approach to reestablishing the economy. This created the oligarch problem. The social safety net was abandoned, which made paupers of millions of Russians.
We should encourage all parties to enter into an immediate and mutually beneficial treaty.
